Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood floors are generally 2,3, 5, or 7 thin sheets of wood (called veneers) that are laminated together to form a single Hardwood floor plank. These floors range from 1/4" to 9/16" in thickness, and from 2 1/4" to 7" in width with random lengths.  The top layer (called the wear layer) is cut from a variety of domestic hardwoods, as well as many exotic wood species.  When comparing different engineered hardwood floors you should pay close attention to the wear layer.  Engineered Hardwood floors with thicker wear layers can be sanded and re-finished and are typically more expensive than engineered Hardwood floors that have a thin veneer wear layer that can not be sanded and refinished.

In the construction of engineered Hardwood floors the wood plies are stacked on top of each other, but generally in opposite directions.  This creates a  hardwood floor that is dimensionally stable and far less effected by moisture than 3/4" solid Hardwood floors.  Engineered Hardwood floors are the best choice for going over concrete slabs.  You should be still sure excessive moisture and humidity are not present.  (Note: concrete slabs must still be dry, clean and well-cured.)

Wood always wants to expand in a certain direction.  In the presence of moisture solid wood planks will always expand across the width of the hardwood floor planks, rather than down the length of the hardwood floor boards.  To avoid this problem, manufacturers of engineered planks place each ply in the opposite direction of each other.  This is called cross-ply construction.  Once the wood plies are glued together (under heat and pressure) each ply will counteract the other plies natural expansion and contraction with changes in humidity.

Engineered Hardwood floors offer amazing versatility and un limited applications.  Now you can have a beautiful Hardwood floor where you never thought possible.  The top of the engineered hardwood floor plank is made of the same solid hardwood that you would find in a solid hardwood floor but the engineered bottom gives the engineered hardwood floors much greater stability.   Now you can have a beautiful hardwood floor in your basement, installed on a concrete slab, even over radiant heat.  Considering a wide plank hardwood floor?  Engineered hardwood floors allow for more stability especially when you desire a wide plank hardwood floor.  Wide plank Solid hardwood floors are more prone to cupping and movement but with and Engineered hardwood floor you can rest assured that the Hardwood floor will perform even in Hardwood floors planks over 6in Wide.   Engineered Hardwood floors are the floors of the future, they allow us to have the same look , feel and beauty of a traditional hardwood floor using less of the valuable hard to sustain Hardwoods from our forests.  Most of which take many decades to mature.  There are some engineered hardwood floors that have the same wear layer as a solid Hardwood floor.  These engineered hardwood floors can be sanded and re-finished just as many times as a solid hardwood floor.  With all the benefits of going with an engineered hardwood floor it is easy to see why engineered hardwood floors are gaining popularity.

Characteristics to consider when choosing engineered hardwood flooring:

  • Engineered Hardwood floors are dimensionally stable and react less to humidity changes.
  • They can be installed below grade over concrete slabs.
  • They can be installed over a variety of sub-floors in a variety of methods.
  • Some can only be sanded and refinished once or twice.  Be sure to compare the wear layer of the engineered hardwood floor, the thicker the wear layer the longer the floor life.  Some can be just as thick as a solid hardwood floor wear layer and can be sanded 5-6 times.
  • Engineered hardwood floors with a thicker wear layer will typically be more expensive than engineered hardwood floors with a thin wear layer.
